As much as I enjoy Sloane Kennedy's writing and characters, I was somewhat confused and offended by this book. First, if you haven't read the previous books in the series, then you will be at a loss to find cohesiveness and coherence in this book. (I had not read the previous books in this Escort series (because they are M/F stories and I have no interest in reading about straight people's relationships and sexual activities.) Even though the writer states that this is a standalone book and can be read by itself, it was difficult to connect with the characters without a prior history. There is no explanation as to where Logan got his money to start his business. Yes, it is mentioned that he was an escort for some time in his past, but is hooking that lucrative to be able to afford to open a bar AND raise his younger sister?? Also, we (the readers who have not read the previous books in the Escort series) have no knowledge of the events that precede THIS book - the evil stepfather, the bar destruction, Savannah's rape, the supposed death of the evil stepfather, and the bisexuality of Dom Berretti) and these things are briefly mentioned as the story progresses, so the reader has to make assumptions and read between the lines in order to piece the background together. Another part of this story that I found difficult to swallow (no pun intended) was that Logan had lived his entire life as a straight man and after one encounter with Dom Berretti, he was emotionally and sexually enthralled with the man. Somehow, Dom is drawn to Logan as well. But why? Dom supposedly saved Logan's life in a bar fire, but how did that all happen? Again, it is briefly mentioned but not elaborated upon and not tied into how Dom and his wife Sylvie chose Logan as their bedmate for one evening before Sylvie's passing. Also, Logan's anger and resentment towards his sister and friends don't make any sense to me. It's all very confusing and, as I stated at the beginning, seemingly lacking in coherence. What I found offensive was that the writer has Dom and Logan having sex (grief sex?) the day of Sylvie's burial. It all seems so sordid and disrespectful. Dom claims to have loved his wife but immediately begins a new relationship upon her death. Sloane Kennedy can write a sex scene like nobody's business, but approximately 50% of the book was devoted to lengthy, extremely graphic sex scenes that went on forever (who has that much stamina?), when more detail and interaction and dialogue could have been devoted to character development. (I suppose if you have already read the previous books in this series, then most of my comments would be moot. But, the author stated that this is a standalone novel and I am pointing out the glaring problems with that declaration.) And finally, why introduce Eli? What was the point? He was an unnecessary minor character that added nothing to the story. I had hoped he was going to play a bigger part, as the author began to give him a connective role between characters, but he was forgotten at the end. I gave this book 3 stars because the writing (quality) is good. But the need to read previous books in order to fully understand the characters and storyline for this book made me disappointed. As a new reader of Sloane Kennedy’s books, I asked for recommendations from her readers on Facebook regarding which book I should start with. Many of them suggested Logan’s Need, which I purchase and quickly read. All I can say is thanks for the perfect recommendation!Logan’s Need could as easily have been called Dom’s Need, as both protagonists existed in damaged states that desperately needed healing. (And, as it turns out, the specific healing necessary could only be provided by each other.) It is an angsty love story, chock full of conflict and heat, which kept me turning pages. I found myself pulling for the unlikely couple, knowing that they belonged together, even when they didn’t. But Logan’s Need is more than a story of passionate love and self-discovery. It is romantic suspense. I found myself waiting for danger, and expecting to find it around every corner. And still, I was surprised when evil finally caught up with the characters!This was the perfect story to read as I lounged on my patio, soaking up the sun. Logan’s Need was my first book by Sloane Kennedy, but it certainly will not be my last!
